fast surface, November 4, 2010 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: SteelSeries 9HD Large Professional Gaming Mouse Pad (Black) (Personal Computers) I currently use the Razer Goliathus and I decided to purchase the Steel Series 9HD because the Razer had too much friction. Its more of a cloth material rather than a smooth surface. When I started using the SS 9HD, the surface is way too smooth. It feels like I'm gliding over nothing, no friction at all. So its harder to control for good aiming, but moves and turns much faster. I play Counter-Strike Source, so I prefer aim over movement. But the SS 9HD is a good mouse pad overall, just not for me though. It would require you to lower your sensitivity if you choose to use the 9HD. Unless you're already using something like metal pad or something.

I play both FPS and RTS (BF3, SC2 and LOL just to name a few) I purchased the Steelseries Sensei mouse and on the website, it stated that the HD series mousepads were recommended and " specifically designed for Laser mouse." So I got the 9HD together with the Sensei mouse.
I've been using the Rocketfish gaming mousepad with the Logitech G5 for as long as I can remember and they have served me well.
But the 9HD is a lot better than the Rocketfish imho. The Rocketfish has 2 sides, 1 smooth for speed and one with more texture for control. Before, I would alternate between both sides, but more recently, I've stuck to using the smooth "textureless" side. The strange yet awesome part about the 9HD is that it has the "textures" yet it's super smooth. And yes, I've tested it with the G5 just to make sure it isn't because I'm using a new mouse. I have over 4000 hours in FPS games. UT2004, Quake 3, COD4, COD mw2, COD bo. Needless to say, I have gone through dozens of mouse pads, looking for the perfect fit. Ill tell you I wish this was easier, as there are pro's and cons to all setups. For quite a while I stuck with cloth mouse pads, and stayed away from hard plastic ones, as I had some bad experiences with some of the func and rat padz. Well I had picked up a Razer Destructor before this pad, and I actually liked it, but thought I would also give the 9HD a try. Well I am glad I did, even though the destructor and 9HD are very similar, I feel like my aim is more consistant with the 9HD. I have made it my perm gaming mouse pad, as its definately the best I have used. I have an allsop generic cloth pad, that I put underneith it, and I dont know why, but seems to be the perfect combo.
